Fill lower chamber with water keeping well below safety valve. Place coffee basket into lower chamber and fill with ground coffee. Do not tamp coffee down, clean sides of any residue ground coffee before placing top chamber on firmly. No need to use excessive force as the vessel has a food grade silicon gasket.
